چکیده

Carbonate sediments have been deposited in oceans and seas from the Proterozoic up to the present day. Their palaeogeographic distribution, extent and composition changed substantially through time. Recent carbonate platforms are closely linked with reef constructions, but, during the past, non-reefal carbonate production played an important role in the periods of the depressed reef-growth (KIESSLING et al., 2003). Under the term “carbonate platform” in Croatia we usually consider the sedimentary environment in the Karst Dinarides from the Late Triassic up to the end of Cretaceous, or even to the Middle Eocene. Nevertheless, the first evidence of shallow-water carbonate platform sedimentation in the western part of equatorial Palaeotethys is related to the Late Viséan (Fig. 1A), with ooids, crinoids and small foraminifera as carbonate producers (VELIĆ et al., 2002; KIESSLING et al., 2003). Geological Background: A Tectonic Panorama of Brazil

The landforms and landscapes discussed in this book developed in a variety of terrains, which together express the diversity of the geological background of the Brazilian territory. Located essentially in the old and relatively stable nucleus of the South American plate (known as the South American platform), Brazil comprises seven major categories of tectonic units, which are as follows: crato...

The Northeastern Margin of the Adriatic Carbonate Platform

The evolution of the northern margin of the Adriatic Carbonate Platform (AdCP) can be reconstructed for the period between the Early Jurassic and the Early Palaeogene. Its recent strike is NW–SE (DRAGIČEVIĆ & VELIĆ, 1994) and can be followed from the Slovenian basin (near Tolmin in Slovenia) extending all the way to the Krasta–Cukali–Budva trough in northern Albania The Northeastern Margin of t...

Tropical westerlies over Pangaean sand seas

Cross-equatorial, westerly winds are key features of tropical circulation in monsoonal regions. Although prominent in numerical climate models of Pangaea (the supercontinent straddling earth’s equator, Late Palaeozoic to Early Mesozoic), such flow has not been confirmed previously by migration directions of ancient dunes. Wind-blown sandstones that span 100 million years of earth history are wi...

Tectonosedimentary evolution of the basins in Central Alborz, Iran

Evidence of at least ten different tectonic- controlled sedimentary basins can be recognized in the central part of the Alborz Mountains in the Middle part of the Alpine-Himalayan belt. They formed from Neoprotrozoic to recent time as the results of the relative plate motion in southwest of Asia in Tethyan realm. The basins include: (1) Prototethys Late Neo-Proterozoic to Early Ordovician epi-c...

Oligocene stratigraphy of the Northern Subcoastal Fars Zone (Tang-e-Khoshk, Zagros structures, Iran): Biostratigraphy and Paleoenvironment

Objective: The Asmari Formation is characterised by alternation thick carbonate and marl sequence of the Oligocene- Miocene in the Zagros Basin, southwest of Iran that were deposited on the shelf of Eastern Paratethys. Methods: This formation is exposed at Tang-e-Khoshk in the Fars subcoastal zone with a thickness of 286 m comprising alternation of medium and thick to massive bedded carbonates,...
